THE KUN-LUN

The Kun-Lun is a major mountain system of Asia. Starting from the Pamirs in the west, the Kun-Lun Mountains extend for 2500 km along the Xinjiang - Tibet border and into the Sichuan Basin. The more narrow western section, which runs from the north-west to the south-east, has three very high peaks: Kongur (7719 m), Kongur-Tiube (7595 m) and Muztagh-Ata (7546 m). The eastern section, which runs from the west to the east, branches into three ranges: the Altun-Tagh in the north, the Hoh-Xil in the south and the Arka-Tagh in the centre. The highest peak of the eastern section is Ulugh-Muztagh (6973 m). A lot of peaks of the Kun-Lun Mountains are over 6000 - 7000 m and many of them are still unclimbed and unexplored.
