April 07, Tom Masterson:
Greetings from Tibet!
I am with a Russian expedition from St. Petersburg: 8 climbers and one doctor. Our goal is the north side of Everest in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest and the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg. There are 3 climbers from St. Petersburg, 1 from near Moscow, 2 from Irkutsk, 1 from Germany (Nurenberg), and myself from Canada (Quebec).
We have made our way slowly from Kathmandu to the border of Nepal with Tibet where the mini-bus was not allowed across the border. All the baggage was put into a truck and we continued by jeep. Kathmandu is low, only about 1300 m, the border town is called Zhang Mu and is perched on a very steep hillside at about 2200 m or 7200 ft. The 4-star hotel had certainly had the bed sheets changed within the last millennium... We went for an evening walk in pouring rain a few hundred meters up the road. The next morning we continued on and up a very impressive road carved out of the mountainside, sometimes even overhanging cliffs, and probably an average angle greater than 45 deg. to a small town at about 3600 m called Nyalam. We walked up a local "Hausberg" to 4250 m. The next day we walked up a nearby hill to 4700 m with spectacular views. The next day we continued on to Tingri at 4400 m and we walked up to 4900 m for an afternoon walk. Tibet is incredibly dry and windy. Tomorrow we will head onto Everest base camp at about 5200 m. I have walked each day with a Russian who lives in Germany (Volodya) and who is very strong!

Please give greetings to Kostya (Frank)

Tingri Mt. Everest from Tingri

April 06, Vladimir Belous:
Hi everybody!
All is OK. Today, on April 6 we have started from Nyalam and have arrived at Tingri by jeeps, here is real Tibet, because we have crossed a pass about 5100 m.
Tingri is much more better than Nyalam, it is a clean enough village, asphalted road, fantastic views of Mt. Everest, Cho-Oyu and Makalu. The weather is very good. In spite of the altitude (4300 m), it is very warm and we tan here.
Parallel with us many expeditions go to Mt. Everest - British, Indian, Basque, American, Romanian and other expeditions.
Right now we feel well, but it is too early to speak about that - will see after our first walks on the mountain. People speak that it is a lot of snow this year.
Tomorrow we will have a rest and acclimatization here. There are hot springs not far from here and we are going to visit them.

April 05, Vladimir Belous:
Hi everybody!
After several unceasing days of worries and movings it was the first day, when I understood how my satellite phone works with e-mail, but I did not check the inverse call to my satellite telephone yet.
Short news about our previous days.
On March 31 we flew from Moscow to Delhi. Because Delhi, Kathmandu and other such cities are full of infections, in the plane from Moscow we have begun our disinfection by Scotch, Gin and Martini, purchased in the duty-free. After a night at the Delhi airport we have flown to Kathmandu.
On April 1 we arrived in Kathmandu and had a festive dinner with powerful desinfection :-))). We have a professional physician Dmitry and he prefers this method because we do not want to drink Metronidazole or other such drugs.
On April 2 we were in Kathmandu and visited a lot of small shops with climbing and tourist equipment and souvenirs in searching for necessary things, that we left in Russia or forgot to take with us. For example, we ordered and bought a Russian flag forgotten by us in Moscow.
On April 3 we drived from Kathmandu to Kodari, crossed the border and stayed at the Zangmu Hotel - the best hotel in this small Chinese town. The town of Zangmu is on the altitude about 2300 m and located on the slope with steepness of 45 degrees. A street is as a serpentine here and its next whorl goes along the roofs of houses of the previous whorl.
On April 4 our caravan of 3 jeeps and a truck drived from Zangmu to the village of Nyalam on the altitude about 3700 m. The road leads along the narrow, deep and very beautiful canyon and we did several stops to take photos and video. At Nyalam we were accommodated at the hotel that looks like a 3- floors shed. After lunch all our members went to the neighboring mountains for acclimatization, but I remained to work with my computer and satellite telephone. After two hours work I could get the first e-mail and then climbed the nearest hill.
Today, on April 5 all members have gone for acclimatization again. Tomorrow we will drive to the next village where we will spend a day for acclimatization too.
Best regards to everybody and to Bratsk.

April 04, Andrey Ershov:
Our St.Petersburg Everest - 2003 Jubilee Expedition has started. On April 1 all nine members arrived in Kathmandu where our Nepalese partners of Royal Mt. Trekking met them. They were accommodated at the Harati Hotel and they prepared and checked their equipment, food and other necessary things on April 2. Yesterday they drived from Kathmandu to Zangmu, crossed the border and spent a night at the Zangmu Hotel. Today they have continued their way to the Everest BC and have reached Nyalam.
The expedition team in its present composition is strong and we hope that the expedition will be successful. All our team members many times climbed 7000-m peaks, four of them summited 8000-m peaks: Anatoly Moshnikov has two ascents of Mt. Everest and one ascent of Dhaulagiri, Marina Ershova and Oleg Nasedkin summited Cho-Oyu and Shisha Pangma, Vladimir Belous was on the top of Shisha Pangma too.

in Moscow on March 31: Belous, Pryutts, Ershova, Nasedkin, Gaidamak and Dulskiy in Kathmandu on April 1: Gaidamak, Moshnikov, Nasedkin, Ershova, Pryutts, Belous, Dulskiy and Totmyanin

March 23, Andrey Ershov:
