DUTCH ELBRUS - 2007 SKI TOUR

At the end of May - the beginning of June a group of five Dutch students visited the Elbrus area in the Caucasus for ski-touring and a ski ascent of Mt. Elbrus. After short acclimatization on the Elbrus slopes they did an attempt to climb Mt. Elbrus. On May 30 Mr. Ernst De Wiljes, Mr. Frederik Kam, Mr. Ernst Verloop, Mr. Willem Peutz, Mr. Bram Albers and their Russian guide Mr. Andrey (Bukh) Ershov climbed on skis to the Saddle (5300 m). But the weather was very bad with visibility about 2-3 m and they leaved their skis on the Saddle and successfully climbed the Western summit of Mt. Elbrus (5642 m) with crampons. From the Saddle they did a ski descent to the Blue Hut (4080 m) and then to the Mir Station (3470 m).
