ERSH TRAVELS EXPEDITION MANAGER AND HIS DUTIES

An expedition manager works like an interpreter and travel assistant and helps the group to solve problems that may arise during the transportation from the airport to BC (to the mountains) and back: changing money, buying something necessary for the group, ordering vehicles, meals and hotel accommodation, etc. As a representative of Ersh Travels he is responsible for proper execution of all necessary formalities: police registration, getting climbing and border permits, etc.

At Base Camp (in the mountains) he helps the group to make a real plan of acclimatization and climbing according to actual weather, snow and other conditions, gives recommendations about necessary equipment, clothes and food for acclimatization and climbing (not very experienced climbers often try to take a lot of unnecessary things on the mountain), solves problems that may arise at BC (in the mountains) with local people, local service personnel, border guards, etc. He helps the group to arrange a transportation of an injured person by a rescue team, car or helicopter and helps the group to make all necessary arrangements on the spot if the group changes its programme.

Depending on the situation on the spot he may be at BC or on the mountain with the group. This is not his duty but normally he climbs with the group. In this case he helps the group to choose the best (safe) climbing route and places for altitude camps according to real conditions on the mountain, to control physical and other conditions of the group members and to change the climbing tactics if it is necessary for safety and success of the climb. He helps the group to fix ropes, to make a path in deep snow, to install tents, etc. During the climb his work is similar to the work of a mountain guide but in the case of an expedition manager the most part of the climbing work is done by the group members, a manager only helps the group and gives his recommendations how it is better to do this work. The group may accept his recommendations or not. That is why an expedition manager is not responsible for the actions of the group during the climb.

An expedition manager may be not very necessary for an experienced group composed of good friends with their own expedition leader but he is very useful for a group composed of members from the different places (countries, cities, etc) that do not know each other well. Such person may be not very necessary for a standard climbing programme but he is very useful for an expedition to a new unexplored area or to a new unclimbed peak. In such cases he plays a role of the expedition leader.
